NOWRA VELO CLUB ROAD CHAMPIONS

The Nowra club had functioned on and off for many years but had ceased all activity about 1962/63.

The club reformed in October 1968 when Nowra hosted a stage start in the NSW Suntour.

The club then ran state opens in 1969 including the Shoalhaven Tour  and the Sutherland to Nowra.

Club championships were run again for the first time in many years in 1969 also.

The club has run continuously since that 1968 restart. It was always known as the Nowra Cycle Club until the 1990's when it changed the name to Nowra Velo Club to become incorporated. We applied to have the original name continue but were refused as it was deemed to close to the Nowra & District Motor Cycle Club.

Over this time many course have been used for these championships throughout the Shoalhaven

NOWRA VELO CLUB MOUNTAIN CHAMPIONS

This event was the idea of Tony Lancaster, who lived in Berry at that time. Tony and his two sons, Harold and Ian were racing with the club and they used Woodhill for training from time to time.

There have been two different start positions, as noted we moved to the current position on Bong Bong Road in 1998. We had previously started on the road, about a kilometre closer to the start of the climb.

The original finish position was just around the corner from the mirror, just before the road turns left and levels off. That was deemed unsafe in 2012 and we moved the finish to the current position.

So there have been three distances for this event, the current one being the longest. (Approx 5.6km)

Also, there was a time when the club allowed riders from other clubs to participate. Two notables were Richard Vollebregt and Danny Hennessy. Vollebregt was the fastest rider on five occasions and Hennessy was twice. Previous Winners - Here
